At King Street Primary School students may have been feeling some school pressure all summer long because the k-2More school's goal was for 90 percent of its students to participate in the Governor's Reading Challenge. They were asked to read 20 books over the summer and report their efforts in a journal. Students who read at least 10 books met the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Summer Reading Challenge and will receive two free tickets to opening day. King Street Primary prides itself on setting high standards and giving students the tools they need to meet and exceed those standards.

Hayestown Avenue Elementary School offers parents a wide range of get-involved activities to help with their child'sMore education, including four "Family Reading Nights" at the school where parents and children go to the school for reading activities. In addition to that, parents are asked to spend 20 minutes a night reading to and with their children. The school has achieved 100 percent participation in parent/teacher conferences. Hayestown also offers the Book Swap Shelf, where students can swap 4th through 6th grade chapter books for free. Before classes started Hayestown hosted "Meet your Classmates," a kindergarten gathering for new students, parents, teachers and the PTO on the playground.

The Danbury Mosque has more than 100 members, most of which meet at the mosque many times each day for prayerMore services. The organization attempts to encourage families to support their children's reading development. This can involve creating play groups for parents and children, a reading readiness camp for first graders and help for incoming kindergarten students. The center works with numerous city groups and agencies to accomplish its goals, including Literacy Volunteers, Danbury Children First, the Family Network of Western Connecticut and CACD.
