The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church was founded in 1796 and was made up mainly of newly freed slaves. In fact, A.M.E. Zion Bishop Alexander Walters, along with W.E.B. DuBois, helped to found the NAACP. The church is devoted to religion and education as well as missionary work, which is largely accomplished through the Women's Home & Overseas Missionary Society. The Christian Education Department of the A.M.E. Zion Church gives support, guidance and direction to the youth of its congregation. Mount Pleasant A.M.E.
