CT PFLAG Chapter Marches in NY Gay Pride Parade

Southwest Connecticut's PFLAG group marched in the 2014 Gay Pride Parade, with supporters from the Norwalk Triangle Community Center cheering them on from the sidelines. The parade was Sunday, June 29, marking 45 years since the Stonewall Riots.

PFLAG stands for "Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays," and is a national non-profit organization with more than 500 affiliates in the United States.

Other events were held in Connecticut during the month of June including a Gay Pride Parade and block party at City Lights in Bridgeport and Pride in the Park, a festival held in Norwalk.

Groups across the globe held events during the month of June to bring to light the issues the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered community faces and to celebrate how far they've come. Master Card encouraged participants in the Gay Pride Parade to Tweet using the hashtag #AcceptanceMatters to share their photos with the world. 

In Ireland, the Dublin Pride Run 5K race was held by the LGBT-friendly Dublin Front Runners. In the Netherlands, the Amsterdam Canal Parade  included gay pride supporters floating boats down the canal, rainbow colors in full bloom. 

Mosaic of Westchester, a group whose mission is for the  full integration of LGBTQ Jews into Westchester Jewish life, marched for the first time in Sunday's parade.

Members of the New York Police Department and the Gay Officers Action League celebrated Sunday as well. Also included in the march was Dolores Nettles, the mother of 21-year-old Islan Nettles, a transgender woman who died after being beaten to death in Harlem last year.

NYC Pride Week was celebrated June 21st-29th this year. The annual week-long series of events is produced by Heritage of Pride, a volunteer-run not-for-profit corporation that organizes Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) Pride events in New York City.
