How the Electoral College Works

Learn how your vote makes an impact.

As the candidates make their last campaign speeches for the 2012 election the question, "why should I vote if the president is chosen by the Electoral College?" still needs to be addressed.

It is true that when we cast our votes in a presidential election our vote is not going towards that candidate or party. However, we are in fact nominating members of the Electoral College who vote for the party we selected.

The number of electors for each state is equal to the number of senators and representatives alloted in the United States legislative branch.

So how can we be certain the elector will vote in our favor?

In Connecticut, among other states, the electors are required by state law to agree with the vote of the people.

Our vote that some think won't make a difference actually determines which way the electors will lean making it important to vote.
