Letter to the Editor, Friends of the Danbury Library

The Friends of the Danbury Library are looking for book sorting space downtown with good parking, a first-floor location and room to sort and store books.

The Friends Need Space!

The Friends of the Danbury Library are in need of a 1500 square feet space for the book sorting and storage that precede our annual book sale as well as for the restocking of our “FRIENDly Bookstore” on the library’s main floor.  The sorting space needs to have heat, A/C, and Internet access for pricing research on more valuable books.  A ground-floor space would be best.  In addition, we need aconvenient location, protected from the elements, so donors can drop off books.

Approximately 100,000 books are offered at our annual book sale.  Many damaged or dated books must be examined and discarded along the way.  This takes a yearlong effort by volunteers, who need room to work—and nearby parking spaces!

The October Danbury Friends book sale typically nets between $30K and 35K, roughly half the Friends’ annual donation to the Danbury Library.  Our contribution is important.  We support junior and adult programs and services the library budget cannot adequately fund on its own.

We are an all-volunteer organization whose commitment is to assist the library in serving the Danbury community.  Right now we need the community’s help to continue our mission.
