What to Wear to See the Dalai Lama?

Deciding what to wear to see the Dalai Lama and how to prepare for a blessing.

by Kat Barton

You’re one of the lucky ones.  You’ve scored tickets to the Dalai Lama and you’re wondering what you should wear.  I know I am.  Should I wear white?

What if I have a chance to meet him do I curtsy? Kiss his ring?  I want to do the right thing.

Researching I discovered that there is nothing to worry about.  The Dalai Lama is a simple person and puts people at ease immediately.  He speaks at colleges all the time. I’m sure he has seen it all.  But still we’d like to make a good impression. That said my research says you should look nice.  Like you are meeting an important person.  I think business casual will be fine.

If there is any chance that you might meet him and receive a blessing it is traditional to have a white silk scarf.  Your encounter with him will be short.  He’ll take the scarf, bow your head and he will place the scarf around your neck.

“Blessing must arise from within your own mind. It is not something that comes from outside. When the positive qualities of your mind increase and the negativities decrease, that is what blessing means.”  His Holiness The Dalai Lama

His Holiness the Dalai Lama will speak on Oct. 18 and 19 at Western Connecticut State University, and the public is invited to a free showing (video simulcast) in the Ives Concert Hall, 181 White St. To help promote this opportunity, WCSU students in the Writing, Linguistics and Creative Process Department's Advertising, Copywriting and Promotions class created a Twitter page. and they are writing this blog daily.
