Planet Fitness Opening Dec. 17

Planet Fitness, which is taking over the former Borders Books location on Federal Road is preparing for a Dec. 17 opening with deals for early joiners.

Customers who join the House Club Use Membership before Dec. 17 will pay a $1 start up fee and $10 per month. This club includes unlimited fitness training, 24 hours a day from 12 a.m. Monday to 9 p.m. Friday. Weekend hours are Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., said Brian Cannone, director of marketing for Planet Fitness. As of Dec. 17, the start-up fee rises from $1 to $49.

Planet Fitness sells itself as a friendly work out environment for people who don't typically belong to gyms, Cannone said. "It's for people who don't want to listen to people grunting and groaning their way through a workout."

The Danbury facility, now under construction, uses both floors of the former Borders Books Music Movies & Cafe at 110 Federal Road, and it includes massage chairs, tanning booths, both stand-up and lie down, and it includes hydromassage rooms.

A higher tier membership is the PF Black Card, which will cost $1 to start up and $19.99 a month after that. The $1 fee lasts until Dec. 17. The membership includes unlimited hydromassage, unlimited guest privileges at any Planet Fitness location, unlimited tanning, use of all Planet Fitness locations worldwide, unlimited use of massage chairs, half-priced cooler drinks, unlimited fitness training and the Planet Fitness Black Card T-shirt. After Dec. 17, the start-up fee rises to $99.

Both membership tiers charge $29, as an annual fee, on June 1. Both club memberships include physical education at Planet Fitness, which is Monday to Friday fitness classes that will concentrate on exercising specific parts of the body at different times. For instance, on Monday, people can take a 30 minute circuit class from 7 to 7:30 a.m., then work on arms from 7:30 to 8 a.m., then legs until 8:30, and abs from 8:30 to 9 a.m. That schedule continues and varies all day and it varies from day to day.

"You work in a group or you can schedule your own program with a trainer," Cannone said. The trainer comes with the membership, and the trainer typically works with a group of up to five people.
