Postponed Graduation Leaves Families in the Lurch

Friday's postponement makes sense as rain falls all over Danbury, but people are wondering about Saturday. The graduation is postponed to Monday.

When Friday's graduation at Danbury High School was postponed from Friday to Monday, that left some families wondering why not Saturday.

In a message to Danbury residents on the reverse 911 system, the explanation is that Danbury will likely experience dangerous or unsettled weather Friday and Saturday.

"Sorry for any inconvenience but safety is our paramount concern," the message said.

"I'd be glad to participate," said Nadine Edwards, 18, a senior, who will be attending Bentley College in September.

Unfortunately, she's also scheduled to attend Bentley's orientation from Monday to Wednesday. She paid for that experience, and she wants to attend. She wants to attend both graduation and orientation.

"When the graduation is scheduled, I'll be in Massachusetts," Edwards said. She said she's hoping for a deal where she can attend orientation late.

Her other problem with Monday is her family from Brooklyn, including her aunt and grandmother, could have come today or Saturday, but not Monday. That removes a lot of family from the celebration of her graduation.

"It isn't a problem for my family," said Danbury High School Senior Jonathan DeBellis. His family lives locally. He said he's hearing it's a problem for other students because of the move to Monday, not Saturday.

"One guy I know was supposed to fly to Florida after graduation. He doesn't know what he's going to do," DeBellis said. That flight will take off before Monday's 5 p.m. graduation.
