Parent Attendance Affects School Decisions

The more parents speak up, the more the Board of Education can hear them.

At last Tuesday's Board of Education meeting, Board Chairman Irving Fox solemnly discussed the fact that of all of the education issues and school budget cuts Danbury's schools have faced this year, the dress code elicited the most comments from parents.  He wondered where the parents were when the City Council held their budget meeting, which resulted in serious cuts in educational programming.

Conversations with Danbury residents show there are misperceptions about the way decisions about school policies are made.  Many parents feel they cannot have an effect on budget cuts.  However, last week's board meeting proved that parents, and even children, can have a very real effect on the way the Board of Ed will vote.

For parents who are interested in having their concerns heard, the first video, featuring Deputy Superintendent Bill Glass, gives guidance and direction for parents to become involved.  From a monthly commitment to only three minutes once a year, Glass shows that it is not hard for parents to make a difference in their children's education.

In the second video, Glass demonstrates some of the budget cuts. For those who missed the budget meetings, this is important information.
