Moms Q & A: Sunny Side of Summer for Teens

What will you do to keep your teens on the straight and narrow this summer?

Freshman Lorena Gutierrez is already excited about the summer. As far as she is concerned, “It's really cool. You can now start to do the things you really like. What am I going to do for the summer? I am going to paint.”

Other students will be living large by traveling to the far reaches of Brazil, Portugal, California and Ecuador. Many see water sports in their future. Robin Hernandez is planning to work, swim, party, and spend some quality time with his dad, who recently entered the hospital with leukemia.

Student George Galvaz said, “I am going to parties where there are a lot of girls. I don't drink or smoke pot. I am 100% against it. That's how I was raised.”

An impromptu survey of Danbury High School students revealed a myriad of summer plans that included boating, partying, working, partying, traveling, partying, volunteering, and yes, more partying.

Happily, most teens were quick to reassure that the interpretation of partying did not necessarily mean drinking or drugs. However, mothers know that idle time is rife with temptation, so Patch has compiled a sampler of Danbury's coolest ways for teens to spend those long hot summer days.

Some students, like Chris Esposito, are already trying to find a job. He hopes to work in a food store, while another young man has some advice from DHS Coach Shaun Ratchford and will be calling the Danbury Youth Services. According to their website, “DYS provides a link between people in our community who need occasional help with odd jobs and students who want to earn money in their spare time.” To contact DYS, visit http://www.danburyyouthservices.org/programs/yes/ or call Tom at 203-748-2936 x23.

For those who are looking for volunteer work, which is a must for every college applicant, there is also the Youth Volunteer Corps Of Western Connecticut which promises, “Extended service projects, days or weeks long, that will give you an opportunity to accomplish greater outcomes, reinforce teamwork and continue to develop an appreciation for diversity and civic responsibility.” Contact person: Samantha Sommerer, Program Coordinator, (203) 797-1154, Youth Volunteer Corps Of Western Connecticut
