Backhoes Arrive for School Expansions

Work started at Stadley Rough and Shelter Rock elementary schools the day after students left for the summer. Work is also underway at Park Avenue and at Mill Ridge in a race to finish by opening day in August.

Danbury Voters approved a $44 million expansion and renovations to four schools in November 2012. The Public Works Department brought equipment to the schools before they closed.

In general the work involves expanding Stadley Rough, Shelter Rock and Park Avenue schools. The former Mill Ridge Intermediate School will be renovated into the Mill Ridge Middle School. It will take students from Broadview Middle School and Rogers Park Middle School. Mill Ridge will include the district's growing STEM program for students interested in science, technology, engineering and math. It will also offer a program in international studies so students attending Danbury's international magnet school can continue their internationally-focused education.

Farid Kouri, the city engineer, agreed to discuss the renovation plans in detail Thursday. This story will be updated Thursday.
