Immanuel Lutheran Coming Down

Danbury is demolishing the former Immanuel Lutheran School in anticipation of building a new building on Foster Street to house all of Danbury's head start programs.

After removing all of the asbestos earlier this fall, Danbury has started demolishing the former Immanuel Lutheran School on Foster Street.

One goal is to remove the old building and have a new one ready for school in September 2012 for all of Danbury's Head Start programs. Both Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton and Public Works Director Antonio Iadarolla have told the Board of Education this schedule will work.

Board of Education Chairman Irving Fox has repeatedly presented this problem to his board in meetings. If we had the space already for all-day kindergarten, where would we get the money for the extra teachers?

Mayor Boughton has raised the same question, saying the city needs the extra space today to deal with over crowding in its schools, not for all-day kindergarten. He wants all-day kindergarten, but wonders where the money will come from. For a story related to over-crowding in the Danbury Public schools, click here.
