Event Friday to Pre-Qualify $1M in Mortgages for Danbury Area Homebuyers

At least six banks will be on hand to pre-qualify new homebuyers during the "Home in a Day" event.

On Friday, July 18, the Housing Development Fund (HDF) will host a one-day event called “Home in a Day,” where first-time homebuyers can become pre-qualified by one of six local banks for a mortgage and learn about other support to help them purchase a home.

Aspiring homeowners can visit Western Connecticut State University between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. that day and check their eligibility for generous state wide housing assistance programs including Live Where You Work program (LWYW) and SmartMove.

HDF has set a goal of pre-qualifying eligible homeowners for $1 million in assistance during Home in a Day.

Participants will also receive a free copy of their credit report and access to educational information on topics including the home buying process, locating a property and legal considerations for aspiring homeowners.

Attendees can register in advance by visiting hdf-ct.org/homeinaday and reduce their wait. Walk-ins are also welcome.

At the event, homebuyers must supply 2013 tax returns, copies of 2013 W2s, four pay stubs (for any borrowers) and their driver’s license.

Homebuyers will have the chance to sit with a loan originator from a local bank to determine whether they can pre-qualify for a first mortgage. Currently, six banks have committed to attend the event. Afterwards, they can discuss their credit report with a housing counselor from HDF, and learn about whether they are eligible for programs that offer low-interest loans to help with down payment and closing costs.

Participating banks include:

  • Savings Bank of Danbury
  • Newtown Savings Bank
  • Union Savings Bank
  • First County Bank
  • Chelsea Groton Bank
  • Naugatuck Valley Savings and Loan.

All six banks will have staff on site to meet with prospective homebuyers, and complete pre-qualifications.

Home in a Day will provide each aspiring homebuyer with a roadmap to buying their first home, and will guide them through an assessment of their finances and credit so by the time they leave the Western Connecticut State University campus, they will know what steps to take to achieve their goal.
