Incumbent State Rep. David Scribner will be the only candidate for Connecticut's 107th legislative district in November after winning Tuesday's Republican Primary for the seat with 60.8 percent of the vote (1,022 votes).
Scribner beat out challenger and caucus-endorsed candidate Harry Shaker, who garnered 660 votes (39.2 percent) of the 1,682 ballots cast in Brookfield, Bethel and Danbury. In Danbury, Scribner won 31 votes to Shaker's 18 votes.
all of Brookfield, approximately 32 percent of Bethel and a small portion of Danbury. Bethel Republicans favored Scribner 206-73, as did voters in Danbury, 31-18.
Brookfield voters, who were more familiar with Shaker through his position on the local Board of Education (BOE), broke for Scribner 785-569, a relatively close margin for .
"Initially it's disappointing," Shaker said Tuesday night of the loss. "But I had prepared myself that we could get beat by 6-700 votes… We went from ground zero and got to a point where we ended up capturing almost 40 percent.”
Shaker said he spoke with Scribner Tuesday night to congratulate him on the party endorsement and reiterate that he does not plan to continue on to November.
“The constituents have spoken and I will honor their voice,” he said. “I will stand behind David so long as he stands behind the three towns and the district.”
While he stands behind Scribner, Shaker said he hopes his opponent will “consider why we got 40 percent of the vote,” when he has received overwhelming support from local Republicans in the past. “I hope David would look at this race as a stepping stone for him to be even better.”
Scribner was not immediately available for comment Tuesday night.
