Republicans want to repeal a new four-cent gasoline tax scheduled to kick in on July 1.
State Senator Michael McLachlan, R-Danbury, will be seeking petition signatures Monday at the Food Bag Citgo station on West Street from 4 to 6 p.m. McLachlan said the tax will start on July 1 no matter what, but he hopes the special legislative session this summer can repeal the new tax if enough people sign the petition.
The new tax arose when state legislators took more than $100 million from the state's Transportation Fund to pay for the 2014 and 2015 state budgets. The Transportation Fund is supposed to be a lock box the legislature can't raid, so after raiding it to make the budget deal, the legislature then passed a law blocking any future raids.
"They go in every year and raid the lock box," McLachlan said. "They have to figure out how to say no to spending."
