Carter Triumphs Over DeMoura in 2nd District Race [Updated]

Republican Dan Carter wins re-election to this multi-town district.

Dan Carter fended off a challenge from Democrat Steven DeMoura yesterday, winning another term representing the 2nd District.

Carter, a Republican, took 68 votes in Newtown, compared to 21 for DeMoura. The district was modified this year and includes a small section of Newtown. It also stretches into Bethel and Danbury.

The original report follows:

With new borders in the 2nd District, this year's race brings in a new constituency from Newtown and, therefore, an added element of uncertainty as to the outcome.

"I'm hearing good things," said Dan Carter, the incumbent running for a second term. Carter was outside the Bethel Municipal Center for hours Tuesday. "I'd like for people to feel politics is something they can be interested in."

Democrat Steven DeMoura is after the seat currently held by Republican Dan Carter in this race that includes portions of Newtown, Danbury, Bethel and Redding. Redistricting this year brought Newtown into the mix.

DeMoura is a lifelong Bethel and Danbury resident who is employed as an attorney at the firm Pinney Payne in Danbury. He serves on Bethel's Board of Assessment Appeals.

On his campaign website, DeMoura states:

"I promise to listen, work and represent you with integrity, energy and passion. I am determined to work hard to control taxes and spending, to create job opportunities for working families and ensure that our children get the education they need to compete in today’s global economy."

Carter, who is serving his first term representing the 2nd District, is a health care consultant. He resides in Bethel and is a U.S. Air Force veteran.

In an interview with the Daily Voice, Carter said:

"I’ve proven I’m the hardest-working guy in politics, but I am new and still have a fresh perspective. I just started this two years ago, and I’m still fighting the same battle. I came in to make changes to get a hold of state spending and reduce taxes, those are the big deals."

Who are you voting for in this race and why?
