The Caraluzzi family is in the process of winning approval for a new grocery store, this one at 102 Mill Plain Road in Danbury with an attached liquor store and a second un-named retail attached.
The family opened its first grocery store in Bethel in 1949, and today has grocery stores in Bethel, Newtown and Georgetown, as well as Caraluzzi's Nutmeg Discount Liquors in Bethel.
"I think they do a good job in Bethel," said Danbury Permit Center Coordinator Sean Hearty. "Here they're looking at a grocery store with a liquor store attached."
The proposal calls for a grocery store of under 30,000-square-feet plus a 6,000-square-foot liquor store and a third retail space, as yet un-named. The building also has office space, according to the Danbury Planning Department. The Planning Commission is considering special permits for the liquor store and a special permit for the grocery store to sell beer.
