Democrats Don't Oppose Boughton for Mayor

Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton will run unopposed for mayor in November after the Democrats failed to field a candidate Monday night.

"It's not going to be the best of evenings," said Democratic Town Committee Chairman Joe DaSilva. He asked several times for nominations from the floor, especially for a mayoral candidate, but he had no takers. The party also did not nominate a candidate for treasurer, or any candidates for the third ward or the seventh ward of the city council.

DaSilva tried to encourage people to step forward, saying they would be doing it to help the party, not necessarily to win election. "We do it because it's important," DaSilva said. "It might not be a guaranteed win."

No one stepped forward. Two years ago in this situation, Lynn Taborsak, a former state legislator and city council member, agreed to run. Boughton beat Taborsak in the 2011 election, as he won the previous five elections dating back to 2001.

Town Clerk Lori Kaback was nominated for reelection, and she thanked the party for its endorsement.

"I love my job as town clerk," Kaback said. "I'm honored to represent this party and will continue to work to make Danbury proud."

The Democrats nominated Dennis Perkins and Richard Kovacs to run in the first ward for City Council. They picked Helena Abrantes and Bill Taylor to run for the second ward. They found no one to run in the third ward.

The Democrats named Peter Nero and Tom Saadi, both incumbents, to run in the fourth ward. They named Fred Visconti and Duane Perkins, both incumbents, to run in the fifth ward. They picked Ben Chianese and Paul Rotello, incumbents, to run in the sixth ward. They had no one Monday night to run in the seventh ward.

The party then nominated at-large candidates for city council. They were Frank Anders, Andrea Gartner, Al Almeida, Robert Taborsak, Dev Patel, Paul McAllister and Henry Hall.

For the Board of Education, the party nominated Rich Janelli and Kathleen Molinaro.

For the Zoning Commission, the party nominated Ken Gucker, Ted Haddad, Rich Jowdy and Jim Kelly.

For the Zoning Commission Alternate, the party nominated Bill Tanner.

For constables, the Democrats nominated Bruce Lees, Fran Kieras and Butch Coladarci.
