Boughton, Chosen to Run for Mayor Again, Sees Successes

Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton said the city has some successes in the last two years and some work to do in the next two years during his acceptance speech after winning the Republican Party's endorsement to run again for mayor.

Danbury has a low unemployment rate (lower than any other Connecticut city,) a low crime rate, a strong bond rating, and numerous small business openings and large business expansions under way, said Boughton.

He said the city is in good shape, but it will be in better shape when 100 percent of the city's children attend all-day kindergarten. He said Danbury won't have enough space for all students to attend all-day kindergarten until 2014, when expansion projects are completed at Stadley Rough, Shelter Rock, Park Avenue and at Mill Ridge Intermediate School.

"We have a number of things to work on," Boughton said, including Main Street and finishing the school building projects to make all-day kindergarten available for everyone. "It is a major stumbling block for families who are thinking of moving to Danbury. They want to know the city has all-day kindergarten."

Boughton said the city must continue to work on quality of life issues in the Spring Street, Main Street areas. "People get uncomfortable," Boughton said.
