Danbury Police: UPDATE: Kicking a Police Dog Assault, Restraint

A Franklin Street man kicked K9 Zeke in the face while trying to escape police who were looking for a suspect in a sexual assault in Danbury at about 11 p.m. Saturday.

Danbury Police charged Jose Castro, 21, Franklin St., Danbury, with second-degree unlawful restraint, breach of peace, third-degree assault, interfering with a police officer and cruelty to animals at 11:12 p.m. Saturday. Castro was held on a $100,000 bond.

Police said the incident unfolded this way. Police drove to Franklin Street and Farview at about 11:15 p.m. Saturday, where a 22-year-old female victim stated an Hispanic male came up from behind her and grabbed her around the face and neck, but she was able to break away. She said the suspect ran behind 36 Franklin St.

Police Officer Topa and his K9 Zeke located the suspect a short time later concealed in thick brush and the suspect began kicking at Zeke, and after kicking Zeke in the face, Zeke bit him on his right thigh.

Suspect was identified as: Jose Castro, 21, Franklin Street, Danbury. He was charged with second-degree unlawful restraint, breach of peace, third-degree assault, interfering with a police officer and cruelty to animals.

Castro was treated and released from the emergency room, and was held on a $100,000 bond for a Sept. 30, court date. The female victim received a minor injury to her lip. K9 Zeke did not receive medical treatment.

This information was provided by the Danbury Police Department. A person charged with a crime is innocent until having been convicted in court.
