Danbury Man Wakes Up to a DUI

This article was written by Bill Bittar, Editor.

Police arrested a Danbury man, who an officer found asleep at the wheel at 3:15 a.m. Aug. 3, while his red Honda was parked at the intersection of Bagburn Road and Monroe Turnpike with the headlights on and the engine still running, according to the report.

Antonio Castro-Rodriguez, 31, of Davis Street was charged with DUI, operating with a suspended license, improper parking and failure to carry an insurance card. He was released on $500 bond for an Aug. 13 court date.
Police said an officer pulled behind Castro-Rodriguez's Honda to see if he was okay and because the vehicle could pose a hazard being parked at the intersection.

The officer opened the driver's side door, reached in and turned off the vehicle before waking Castro-Rodriguez up, according to the report.

After the officer asked Castro-Rodriguez if he was okay and Castro-Rodriguez told him he was fine, police said the officer asked him if he knew where he was and that Castro-Rodriguez said he was in Danbury.

Castro-Rodriguez had the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on him and told the officer he had a few beers at his friend's house in Bridgeport, the report said.

He did not have his driver's license on him, could not find his insurance paperwork and appeared to be confused and intoxicated, police said.

Police said Castro-Rodriguez stumbled and nearly fell to the ground while getting out of his car to participate in field sobriety tests, which determined he was under the influence.

At headquarters, police said Castro-Rodriguez failed to follow directions for a breath test, which was cited as a refusal to participate.
