Danbury Man Arrested in New York on Stolen Firearm Charges

Troopers find a loaded, allegedly stolen gun after pulling over a U-Haul for driving on a non-commercial parkway.

A New York State Trooper pulled over a Danbury man Tuesday on the Taconic Parkway and discovered a loaded gun that had been reported stolen in Texas.

According to the arrest report, a trooper was monitoring traffic in a work zone around 10:40 a.m. Tuesday when he observed a commercial U-Haul truck traveling southbound.

During the traffic stop, the driver, 31-year-old Jonathan Binder, of Danbury, said he was in the process of moving from Texas to Connecticut and showed the officer a Texas driver’s license. The officer also discovered a loaded firearm that was not registered in New York State.

The State Police Bureau of Criminal investigation conducted a detailed investigation into the possession of the firearm and determined that the weapon was reported stolen in Texas.

Binder was charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, felony criminal possession of stolen property, misdemeanor criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, unlawful possession of marihuana and operating a commercial vehicle on the parkway.

He was arraigned in Town of LaGrange Court and remanded to Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $1,800 cash bail.
