STATEMENT IN RECOGNITION OF JUNETEENTH

Hartford, CT – Connecticut Democratic Party Chairwoman Nancy DiNardo released the following statement in recognition of Juneteenth:

“When Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, they relayed General Order Number 3, and the state’s slaves were freed. On this day almost 150 years ago, our country took a step towards a more perfect union, and today we reflect on the stain of slavery on our nation’s history, remember all who lived through it, and commemorate those who fought to end it.

“Yet, the fight for equality continues in our nation. Voter expansion, non-discrimination, marriage equality – all aim to extend the full set of rights to which Americans are entitled. And Connecticut Democrats are helping lead the charge across the country.”
