Snow Day Activities

No Danbury Family Literacy Center playgroup today due to the snow, but here are a few things you can do with your children while you are all home.  1. Put out a clean bowl and collect the snow. Bring it in later in the afternoon, make snow balls with it and drip maple syrup over it.2. If you need to be wrapping presents, give your children all the left over wrapping paper, a big box, scissors (if they can handle them) and tape or glue. Let them make a present or giving box for other. The hours that it takes to cut and glue on the scraps will provide for a few mommy/daddy minutes.3. Make simple sugar cookies and have the children cut them out and decorate them.4.  If it is too cold to go outside collect some snow in a big bowl, bring it in onto the kitchen floor or table, have the kids put on gloves and play in it. Give them cookie cutters, measuring cups or other kitchen utensils to play in it.  After they play in it make a cup of hot cocoa and stir it with a candy cane. 5. When it is rest time, play a version of the Snowman (a movie with only music and no words). It is comforting for them to listen to and image as they watch it.6.  Put out a large piece of black paper and let the snow fall on it. Bring it into a fairly cool place and look at the snow flakes with a magnifying glass. 7. For mom or dad make a nice steamy cup of tea or coffee and enjoy the day with your children. Sit and see the wonder on their faces as the snow flakes hit the ground.  Live a few minutes enjoying the wonder of childhood and seeing things through your child's eyes. Enjoy-it doesn't get any better than that. Childhood goes really fast-enjoy it while you can. And that is the best it will get today.
