Lifelong Bethel, Danbury Resident Kathryn Bates, 89

The following obituary was provided by Cornell Memorial.

Kathryn L. (Coffey) Bates, 89, a lifelong Danbury and Bethel resident passed away on Thursday, Aug. 22 in Danbury.

Born Feb. 18, 1924 to the late Martin, Sr. and Helen (Johnson) Coffey, she graduated from Danbury High School in 1942 and was employed by the Danbury Rubber company before marrying her husband of 42 years and returning home to raise her family. She later worked for B&S embroidery in Danbury.

She will always be remembered for her Sunday family dinners, her love of family gatherings and her commitment to driving anyone in need of a ride, wherever they had to go.

Kathryn is survived by her youngest son, Roger Bates, Sr.; her daughter in law Charlene Bates; her grandson, Roger “R.J.” Bates, Jr., and her granddaughter Kelly Bates, all of Danbury. She is also survived by one sister, Dorothy Freer of Ridgefield, as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Harry M. Bates; her sisters Elizabeth Christie of Carmel, NY and Joan Coffey of Bethel; her only brother Martin “Sam” Coffey, Jr. of Danbury; as well as her elder son Harry Bates of Danbury.

Funeral Information

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 26 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Danbury. Interment in St. Peter Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

In Lieu of Flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 12 Cottage St., Danbury.
