Arlene Malichio, 74

March 18, 1938 - March 04, 2013

Arlene M. Malichio, 74, of Danbury died at her home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, March 4. She was born March 18, 1938 in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of the late Henry E. and Veronica M. (Schilley) Byrnes.

Arlene was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was an avid reader, collected tea pots and loved jigsaw puzzles.

Arlene will be missed by her children, Paula St. Amand and her husband Ron of Danbury, Laura Campanelli of Branford; Ann Marie Corso and her husband Greg of Danbury, Christine Kijek and her husband Ed of Bethel, Fran Mendonca of Danbury, Anthony Malichio of Danbury and Mary Ann Mitchell and her husband Bob of New Milford; 15 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; her sister Patricia Guerriero of NJ as well as many nieces and nephews.

Arlene was predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years, Frank Malichio; 2 sisters, Margaret and Rita and her brother John.

Funeral Information

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 8 at St. Edward the Confessor Church, Route 39, New Fairfield. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends between the hours of 4 and 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 7 at Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury.

It shows and compares what Danbury is paying per student compared to the rest of the state. Looking at the numbers, out of the 170+ districts in the state, Danbury pays the 8th LEAST amount per pupil. Out of the 10 districts in Connecticut that have over 10,000 students, Danbury ranks 2nd LOWEST in the state. This amount is about $3,000 less per pupil than the average of the state and the average of districts with 10,000+ students.

See staff cost summary on page 8 of the report. You'll also note our board of education plans to spend a bit more than 3 million dollars on supplies and materials plus a million on equipment. The budget represents a 5% increase from the prior year. On our district home page - http://www.danbury.k12.ct.us/ it says Danbury has 10,300 my calculator tells me that's about $12,000 per child in the district. With $12,000 per child, why are teachers paying for supplies? Hmm ... let me think ... 95% of the budget goes to staff salary and benefits for the long 185 day year .... I have a guess where the money goes. Do you?
