Unique Father's Day Gift Ideas

If your dad is anything like mine—finding the right gift always presents a challenge. At this stage of his life, he buys what he desires and money is not a problem for him. He no longer needs any “things,” so I opt for something consumable. As one of six siblings, I find bottles of wine and restaurant gift cards can tend to be redundant.

So now I look to the gift of entertainment and this summer Ives Concert Park has it covered!

Tony Bennett is the biggest star among the offerings this summer. Known for his signature song “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” this 86 year old singer will delight audiences on July 13 at Ives. On July 16, the English revival band The Specials will perform. If radio personality Garrison Keillor is more to your dad’s taste, he’ll be appearing on July 25.

The Newtown Savings Bank Fine Arts & Family Series will feature the WCSU production of “Alice in Wonderland,” as well as “War Stars: An Unauthorized Parody,” the Golden Dragon Acrobats from China and the Connecticut Ballet Summer Dance Caravan.

And if music festivals are more his style—two are returning for repeat engagements: the Beatles Music Festival featuring 10 bands on Aug. 4 and the Reggae Festival with Beres Hammond and Maxi Priest on Aug. 10.

Finally—if dad’s on the younger side or young at heart—look into the Summerland Tour with Everclear, Filter, Live and Sponge; folk artist Brandi Carlile, or the Dropkick Murphys.

Reserved seats provide the best view—but if you’re on a limited budget—the lawn seats are more reasonable. You can bring your own food into the lawn area, so consider placing the show tickets in a picnic basket filled with snacks, goodies and a blanket. (Please note that no beverages are allowed into the park.)

The park is handicapable friendly. Golf carts meet less mobile guests at the front gate and bring them to the seating area. After the show, the carts return guests to the front gate. There is also a wheelchair-accessible area that is paved and affords a great view of the show. Accommodations in this area must be reserved in advance by contacting the venue at www.ivesconcertpark.com.

Visit Ives Concert Park on Facebook or www.ivesconcertpark.com for all of the details. Tickets for the Celebrity Series are for sale at www.ticketmaster.com  and links to purchase tickets for the Fine Arts & Family Series are clickable from our website.

Now go order those tickets and don’t forget one for mom, too!

One more thing—in the comment section below, tell us your dad’s best quality.
