INEXPENSIVE FAMILY FUN

Family entertainment that does not break the bank is not always easy to find. Ives Concert Park has it covered this summer with offerings from The Newtown Savings Bank Fine Arts & Family Series. Reward your children for the great job they did at school this past year.

For as little as $15 per adult or $10 per senior or child under 12 you can see the WCSU production of “Alice in Wonderland.” The audience is seated on the main stage—up close and personal—for maximum enjoyment of WCSU’s theater department performers. Every theater department production I’ve attended is top-notch. Shows are at 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 6 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 7. Purchase a Family Four-Pack for $40 for the best savings. Coloring activities and face painting are available to children who attend the matinee performances. Those who arrive in Alice costumes receive an autographed “Alice in Wonderland” poster.

On Saturday, July 6, there is an additional bonus—“War Stars: An Unauthorized Parody”—follows the production of “Alice” at 9 p.m. “War Stars” is free with an “Alice” ticket or $10 on its own. The parody is a one-man show enhanced by lights to tell of battles, robots and the mysterious forces in our galaxy.

The Golden Dragon Acrobats from China return this year with their colorful acrobatic and traditional dance spectacle on Sunday, July 14. Tickets purchased as a Family Four-Pack for $50 provide the biggest discount.

And you can’t do better than FREE. That’s right. The Connecticut Ballet Summer Dance Caravan performs classical and contemporary duets on Friday, July 26. As an added bonus, guests arriving early can try a ballroom dance class. A “Meet & Greet” dance party reception follows the performance.

Music festivals at the park are another bargain. The Beatles Music Festival featuring 10 bands on Saturday, Aug. 3 with pricing starting at $20. Inflatables and face painting enhance the experience for children.

The following Saturday, Aug. 10, the Newtown Savings Bank Fine Arts & Family Series presents a Heart and Soul Entertainment Reggae Festival with Beres Hammond and Maxi Priest. Last summer the food offerings were as enticing as the entertainment.
