Let's Save Energy - A Penny Saved Is Two Pennies Earned

Hello again.

Have you heard the expression “a penny saved is two pennies earned”? If you think about it, that expression really makes sense. As you know, your take home pay is much less than what you earn. Federal and State income taxes, social security tax, Medicare tax, tolls, gasoline taxes, etc., all take a bite out of your paycheck.  For every dollar we earn, after taxes, we end up with about 50 cents!  However, if you can save a dollar, by not spending it, it is not taxed at all….you keep the entire dollar!  So, every dollar you save is really worth 2 dollars earned (and if you invest that dollar, it becomes worth even more).  So, it makes complete sense to save!!   If you save more, you can work 2 times less!

Reducing our energy consumption is all about savings….both dollars and the earth. Have you been thinking about ways to reduce energy consumption in your home?  I am hoping that my short list from last week inspired you to think about this and come up with ways to stop wasting energy.  Once you start thinking about this -  in the same way you would think about changing a bad habit like eating too much (you become aware, and think about not eating as much throughout the day) - you will find ways to reduce your energy consumption. Guaranteed!

Energy saving tip of the week:  Lower your water heater temperature to a maximum of 120 degrees, which is sufficiently hot for all of your hot water needs. Anything above 120 degrees is wasting energy.  Each 10 degree decrease in your water heater temperature can save about 5% on your water heating bills. For an oil-fueled water heater, with 4 people in the home, a 10 degree decrease would save over $100 per year.  $100 saved is worth $200 earned!

Think energy savings every day!

Jeff
