Teaching Women's History To Battered Woman

Darla Shaw, Ph.D, professor at Western Connecticut State University, and Ridgefield resident, will be teaching the history of women's rights and their struggles at the Women's Center of Greater Danbury later this month. The 10-week class will stretch through the fall.

"I want to really inspire these women and show them how hard women had to work to get where they are today," said Shaw, who said her first 10-week session filled up in about 10 days. It now has a waiting list. She plans to offer it again and may expand it to other women's centers around the state. "We already have other women's centers in other cities interested."

Shaw said the whole movement of women's rights is so fascinating, it can't help but inspire women in trouble themselves. Shaw said she will ask her students about remarkable women they know themselves and the obstacles they had to overcome.

"Even in my life, I was denied so many things because I'm a woman," Shaw said. Shaw said she's looking forward to talking to the class and finding out what they're interested in and what they need. She will tailor the class to fit those needs.
