Summer is a Time to S.H.A.R.E.

The Mill Ridge S.H.A.R.E Club (Showing Help and Responsible Emotions) fosters character education

The S.H.A.R.E. Club was developed by the Mill Ridge Family Resource Center to offer students the opportunity to enhance social skills, engage in community service activities and develop positive character. Summer S.H.A.R.E. is divided into three topics of study; respecting self, the environment and the community.  Through a variety of community service projects and team building activities students explore their world and the positive influence they can offer.

S.H.A.R.E. Club member Tiana Taft is enjoying the benefits of the summer program,"During the first week I liked making gumdrop bridges because it was fun and I got to work as a team." Member Katherine Quinn agrees and is excited about planting flowers during the second week, "We are going to make the school look really nice."

The best way to inspire children to participate in community service is to begin at home. Encouraging small acts of kindness like caring for a pet or reading to a sibling, can teach even young children the power of compassion for others.  Developing positive character aides children in their relationships and interactions with teachers, peers and the community.

It is never too early to teach children about community service and responsible emotions.  Many schools incorporate character education into daily curriculum. While literacy and mathematics are essential components to a child’s academic career, it is important not to overlook the value of character education.  For more information, please visit http://charactercounts.org/sixpillars.html or http://www.yeskidzcan.com.

  • S.H.A.R.E. Club would like to thank Union Savings Bank for their generous donation and support of the program.  Members would also like to extend a thank you to Principal, Dr. Mary Cronin, for allowing the program to operate from Mill Ridge Primary School this summer.
