New book on Danbury hot off the presses

Long-awaited volume covers Danbury's history from 1889, when the state legislature made Danbury a full-fledged city, to the celebration of its 300th birthday year in 1984-85.

The Danbury Museum & Historical Society Authority has announced the release of Danbury’s Third Century: From Urban Status to Tricentennial, produced by Western Connecticut State University and written by Dr. Herbert Janick, Emeritus Professor at WCSU and William Devlin, a graduate of WCSU and author of We Crown Them All: An Illustrated History of Danbury. This long-awaited volume covers Danbury’s history from 1889, when the state legislature made Danbury a full-fledged city, to the celebration of its 300th birthday year in 1984-85. The volume traces the decline of Danbury as a center of hat manufacturing that was followed, not by devastation, but by an economic and cultural transformation.

Danbury’s Third Century: From Urban Status to Tricentennial is available for purchase at the Danbury Historical Society located on 43 Main St. in Danbury.  Hardcover editions of the book are $20 and a softcover edition is $15.

All proceeds from the sale of the book, printed in both hardcover and softcover editions, will benefit The Friends of the Danbury Museum & Historical Society Authority.
