Danbury Pet Shelter "Tails of Courage" Celebrates New Digs

A Danbury pet shelter and their dogs are celebrating their new digs. Tails of Courage was founded in 2009 by Kristan Exner, a survivor of the World Trade Center attacks. She began the charitable organization after a therapy cat helped her when she was suffering post traumatic stress disorder after 9/11.

Exner said she wanted to learn more about therapy pets and soon began training therapy dogs that they give away to returning vets to help them cope with PTSD. Tails of Courage rescues dogs from high kill shelters and generally has about twenty dogs that are looking for their forever home at any given time.

Currently they are looking for homes for The Lab Litter, among others. The puppies all have dessert names because they are "the sweetest cutie-pies you could ever meet," according to their Facebook page. Tiramisu is a baby Yellow Lab who just arrived from South Carolina by transport, along with my 6 litter mates. The 8-week-old puppies are all different colors; yellow, chocolate, black and multi-colored.

They are also looking for home for long time shelter dog "Charming," the dog who has been at the Tails of Courage kennel the longest, for seven months. He is about one-and-a-half-years old and is a male German Shepherd mix. Charming is neutered, fully vetted, has all age-appropriate vaccinations and is micro chipped. But perhaps best of all, Charming is house trained!

Charming and the rest of Tails of Courage's adoptable pets can be viewed on their Facebook page or in person any day of the week between the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Tails of Courage moved from their former location on Padanaram road to their new location at Smith Street in the beginning of June. They are seeking donations to fund their new space and will plan a Grand Opening Celebration later in the summer.

The next Great Tails of Courage Adoption Event is on Saturday, June 21, 2014 from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. at Petco, 5 Sugar Hollow Road, Danbury, CT.
