Danbury Students Get New Leaders

Childhood Student Brings His Own Back To Help

When Sensei Nick Demetrius returned to TSMMA Danbury to take over as Owner he didn’t leave his current students in Stamford behind. Instead Demetrius will spend time at both schools. That means he needed help.

That’s where Sempai Ryan Kohler comes in. Kohler has long wanted to become an instructor at Tiger Schulmann’s and has been working closely with Demetrius for six years to achieve this goal.

Kohler was a green belt at TSMMA Stamford when Demetrius took over as head instructor in 2008. He immediately bonded with his new instructor and within a year he had passed the Tiger Schulmann’s Black Belt test. For the last five years he has been helping Demetrius and Joshu Michael Petrello every day in Stamford.

Kohler Soaks Up Experience From Danbury Sensei

Between Demetrius’ twenty two years and Petrello’s nearly 15, Kohler has been able to speed up his learning curve. Now he trains four days a week with the vaunted Tiger Schulmann’s fight team, battling the deep stable of lower weight class fighters like Louis Gaudinot, Nick Pace, Jimmie Rivera, Julio Arce, and Shane Burgos. All five are professional fighters and Tiger Schulmann is never hesitant to use Kohler to help prepare them for upcoming fights. That’s because of his talent and his toughness.

The Black Belt’s trips to Elmwood Park, New Jersey serve two purposes. Kohler is constantly improving his abilities both as a martial arts student and teacher. At the same time he wants to follow in the footsteps of his own instructor. Demetrius was the number one ranked Sport Karate fighter in the world for three years. He then made the transition to Kickboxing and MMA smoothly with five wins, four by knockout, without a loss.
