Boughton, Republicans, Reelected Handily

Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton won reelection easily Tuesday, as did Town Clerk Lori Kaback and Treasurer Dan Jowdy, who ran unopposed.

Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans had hard numbers that included both absentee ballots and day of voting ballots, so the exact figures were not available Tuesday night.

Republicans kept the same 15-6 majority in the City Council, but the names changed.

"We have a lot of things on our plate, and we'll work on them together, as we've always done," said Boughton to a crowd of about 200 people at the Vespucci Lodge. "We win because we work together as a team, as we should. This seventh term is historic, and it wouldn't happen without your hard work."

Paul McAllister, who ran against Bougthon, conceded the election at about 9 p.m. by visiting Boughton at the Vespucci Lodge and congratulating him on his victory.

"That's classy," said Michael Safrenak, vice chairman of the Danbury Republican Town Committee. "I give him a lot of credit for that."

McAllister, a retired police officer, said he congratulated Boughton, and said he knew going in this election would be an uphill climb.

"We started late and knew it was a battle from the start," McAllister said. "We'll regroup and take it from there."

McAllister said he had a lot to think about before considering another run.

Republican Town Committee Chairman Sal Chieffalo congratulated his candidates and the people who worked for the candidates after the ballots were counted.

"You all worked incredibly hard," Chieffalo said.

Joe DaSilva, chairman of the Democratic Town Committee, said the mayor had long coattails in Danbury, and although some candidates ran strong for city council, they didn't win. "Helena Abrantes lost by only 130 votes," DaSilva said. "She has a full-time job."
