A severe thunderstorm packing winds in excess of 60 miles per hour is whipping its way through the area.
Rain and thunder and lightning are already hitting Danbury and most of Fairfield County -- a materialization of the National Weather Service's severe thunderstorm warning, which remains in effect through the evening.
According to the NWS, the storm was located near Bedford, NY, about six miles southeast of Mount Kisco at about 4:30 p.m., and was moving east at about 20 miles per hour.
"While not immediately likely ... a tornado may still develop," the National Weather Service says.
If a tornado is spotted ... act quickly and move to a place of safety in a sturdy structure ... such as a basement or small interior room," the NWS repors. "This is a dangerous storm."
"If you are in its path ... prepare immediately for damaging winds and deadly cloud to ground lightning."
Winds could reach up to 60 miles per hour. As of 4:55 p.m., neither CL&P nor UI were reporting power outages as of 4:55 p.m. Significant delays have been reported in New York City airports, according to @NYCAviation.
