Media Publishes Map of Legal Gun Permit Holders; This WIll Backfire

Posting a map of legal gun-permit holders only serves to show the unarmed. This will not be pretty.

In their ham-handed attempt to seek to publicly shame legal gun-permit holders in New York State, the anti-gun folks have posted a map detailing the homes, (in Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam Counties), where these legal gun permit-holders live. In doing so, they have only succeeded in endangering the homes of non-gun-permit holders.

Congratulations, liberal knee-jerk anti-gun media! You have made it easier for criminals to terrorize the non gun permit-holding citizens of said counties.

For shame, for shame.

What will you say the first time a house wherein you have made sure to inform that there is no legal gun-permit holder residing is burgled, or worse, the target of a home invasion? Exactly.

This pathetic attempt on your part to shame legal gun-holders will backfire. You have not brought attention to legal gun-holders. You have brought attention to the unarmed. These people are now essentially sitting-ducks. Again, Congratulations!

My advice to the fine folks of these afflicted counties in New York State, who do not happen to legally own a firearm is simple: Get a legal gun for your houses. There is now a target on them, thanks to the anti-gun media.

New York must exempt the permit lists from FOI, as I believe CT has. I've identified Doctors I've used before moving to CT, neighbors, and they are at risk for no good reason because of this. In addition to the points made in this letter, these locations may be subject to burglaries for criminals wanting to get what's there, as well as professional ridicule, political harassment and the like.Dumb idea overall, The Journal News has shown itself to be self-seeking sensationalists, wholly irresponsible, and of no journalistic morals (though that could be an oxymoron). Regardless of where one stands on the issue of gun control, a treasure map is stupid, shame on Gannett!

Completely agree with the stupidity of publishing this list. It accomplishes nothing. It does raise one question for me though thinking specifically of the Sandy Hook situation: In a situation where the legal gun owner is a caregiver or legal guardian to a mentally ill person, do neighbors have a right to know that guns are now in the mix with someone who shouldn't ever be near a gun (i.e. the Sandy Hook shooter). Would neighbors have a right to know? Should just the police know? What would be an effective way of managing this situation? I know I would be concerned (especially in hindsight) if I knew my neighbor had firearms, ammo and a mentally ill person living with them? Valid? By no means am I proposing the publishing of gun owner lists.

If I am a violent criminal, or worse, would I try and rob an armed person or an unarmed person? It would seem that the list only serves to help criminals find easier (un-armed) targets. that's my two cents... Happy New Year all.

Your argument bends the facts. At least be truthful in your biased conjecture. They've published a list of those who have permits for HANDGUNS. They specifically state: "The data does not include owners of long guns — rifles or shotguns — which can be purchased without a permit." So, it isn't a logical follow that just because a house doesn't have a permit, doesn't mean they aren't armed. Estimates are that 40%-45% of households own some type of gun (from justfacts.com - which is seemingly unbiased in their statistics). The number of dots on that map sure doesn't seem like 40%-45% of households (whether that number holds true for NY as a whole, I don't know). But, I don't think that somebody who wants to break in to a house, knowing that this map leaves out all SHOTGUN owners, is really going to use it as a "treasure map" to attack those who are unarmed. I mean, not all criminals are stupid enough to think that this is a map to every house that is *safe* to rob. Please.

Good point. I know more than one person who considers their shotgun their best form of home defense and even a few who legally carry to consider a shotgun their best form of home defense. Either way, this or any list published in spite or do intentionally do harm to others is a bad idea that does not respectfully respond to the recent tragedies and does not advance the discussions at hand.
