NFL Draft : First round reaction

Analysis of the first round of the 2013 NFL draft, from a local perspective.

This years NFL draft was the most bizarre draft we have seen in years.  A running back wasn't taken in the first round for the first time since 1963.  There was only one quarterback taken in round one, and I bet it wasn't the one you'd put your money on.  And for the first time in the draft's history, offensive tackles went one-two.  But how did the local teams do?

New York Jets : The Jets didn't monumentally botch their draft as we've come to expect, but they didn't exactly come away from the draft as winners either.  Sitting at nine, Dee Milliner fell into their lap.  I didn't mind the pick.  Milliner is good in bump and run coverage, which helps with Rex's scheme.  But Milliner has poor ball skills, and stuggled against other big time wide recievers in college, such as Tennessee's Cordarrelle Patterson.  I just hope the Jets realize they don't get Nick Saban to coach Milliner as well.

The next pick made me scratch my head.  Jets GM John Idzik said "We got two of our top four on our board."  Sir, if that's true, you shouldn't be a NFL GM.  Richardson is a solid player, and probably will be a five technique interior defensive linemen.  It isn't that I don't like Richardson, it's just the anemic Jets offense needed help.  The Rams jumped to eight to grab top Jets target WR Tavon Austin.  After taking Milliner with Austin off the board, I would have liked to see the Jets trade the pick.  If the Patriots turned pick number 29 into a two, a three, a four, and a seven. The Jets should have tried to move down in this deep draft, similar to thier superior division rival. The Jets didn't fail, but they didn't get that much better as a football team.

New York Giants: Similar to the Jets pick of Richardson, it isn't that I don't like the player taken, just what they took him over.  The Giants at 19 took Syracuse Guard Justin Pugh.  The Giants are old on the o-line, and this pick will help rebuilding.  However, this defense has major holes.  I would have liked the Giants to take Georgia's Alec Ogletree.  Ogletree ended up being drafted by St. Louis at 30.  A linebacker in a safety's body, Ogletree would have been the perfect fit.  Another player the Giants could have had but chose to pass on was Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State.  A big physical corner, would have helped a defense who gave up 29 completions of 30 or more yards last year.

New England Patriots: New England sat at 29, before trading the pick to Minnesota.  Bill Belichick made the move of the draft by turning a late first round pick into four picks (MIN's 2,3,4&7).  If Rhodes fell, I think the Patriots pull the trigger.  He didn't, so the Patriots opted for more picks.  This draft is absolutly loaded in the second and third rounds, so the Patriots, a team who can afford to be patient, made the right move.
