Both Petco and PetSmart have announced they will stop selling pet treats made in China following concerns from pet owners who believe the treats are making dogs and cats sick, sometimes fatally.

San Diego-based Petco was in the process of removing all China-made dog and cat treats from its shelves following the company's decision announced on Tuesday.

"We know some pet parents are wary of dog and cat treats made in China, especially Chicken Jerky products, and we've heard their concerns," Petco CEO Jim Myers said.

"As a leader in the industry and the trusted partner for our pet parents, we're eager to make this transition and to expand our assortment of safe and healthy treats, the majority of which are made right here in the U.S. Very simply, we feel the decision is in the best interest of the pets we all love and, ultimately, for our business."

The U.S. Drug and Food Administration has periodically cautioned pet owners against the treats, though the agency has not been able to clearly link the illnesses to the China-made products. The most recent warning was issued last week.

Petco executives said the treats would be out of their stores by the end of the year.

Phoenix-based rival PetSmart says it will have Chinese-made treats off its shelves by next March.

Each company runs about 1,300 stores.

What treats do you feel safe giving your pets?

We had a melamine poisoning problem in dog food from China a few years ago. I am surprised that big corporations are so slow to act. Unfortunately, with respect to dog food, the label will never tell you where some of the ingredients are from even if the consumer believes he/she is buying from an American company. On the human side, remember the Chinese lettuce that wound up on the shelves at Whole Foods?

I agree with Joe Mancini, China has harmed not only pets also humans, they have been trying for years to eliminate our pets, babies, adults, they have no conscious in my opinion they are pure evil, I check all tags on clothes and anything else I buy that may say China, in Walmart yesterday in the pet section I was speaking to a man reading a package, I asked him what he was reading and he said I a looking for China so I do not bring it home to kill my dog. when I was reading what I found was where the product was distributed from, nothing on where they were made, I ended up walking away from the treat area, scary to think these evil beings are still trying to find ways to harm or kill us, what makes me more upset is our Government is and has been aware of this for years, come on Government it seems to me in your eyes it is worth the deaths of humans and animals as long as the bottom dollar keeps rolling in, I am beginning to think you are becoming as evil as they are, pretty scary...

Why is it going to take until the end of the year to remove them from shelves?!?
