P! News: More Than Holiday Tradition at Gozzi's Turkey Farm

The neighborhood turkey farm has created holiday traditions around its own family tradition.

There's no wondering why Gozzi's Turkey Farm would get numerous  orders for the holidays but what would keep generations of families returning to the farm just for a visit?

"It's a family secret," said Bill Gozzi, the third generation turkey farmer of the Guilford farm's colorful attractions.

The "magical turkeys" as they are called by some are a group of colorful turkeys on display in front of the farm beginning in November through Christmas time. Anyone from school children to families to seniors groups can be seen pulling up to view the spectacle.

"(My grandmother) started this as a thing for the kids in the neighborhood," Gozzi said. "It caught on and we couldn't not do it now."

Greg Nobile, of P!News talked turkey with the Gozzi and nimbly tried to pry the family secret from him but it is too closely guarded. No one but the Gozzis know how or when the turkeys acquire their colors and creating new breed of turkeys seems to be the family's specialty. Gozzi said his grandfather was one of the first farmers to create a white turkey, the Gozzi White.

According to Gozzi, approximately 15,000 Gozzi Whites are on people's dinner tables during the holiday season. The turkeys are available in sizes ranging from 10-lbs to 28-lbs and they are $2.59 a pound.

The farm is located at 2443 Boston Post Road in Guilford and the public is welcome to visit the colorful attraction and/or place an order. Call (203) 453-2771 for more details.

Good afternoon Jessica, Danbury plans to spend approximately $114,000,000 on teaching staff salaryRead More and benefits for the next school year per the school budget here - http://www.danbury.k12.ct.us/bbadmin/Budget/2012-2013%20budget.pdf the total budget is $121,000,000. Teachers, administrators, contracted professionals, staff enrichment programs, staff insurance, and the rest comprise about 95% of the school system budget. See staff cost summary on page 8 of the report. You'll also note our board of education plans to spend a bit more than 3 million dollars on supplies and materials plus a million on equipment. The budget represents a 5% increase from the prior year. On our district home page - http://www.danbury.k12.ct.us/ it says Danbury has 10,300 my calculator tells me that's about $12,000 per child in the district. With $12,000 per child, why are teachers paying for supplies? Hmm ... let me think ... 95% of the budget goes to staff salary and benefits for the long 185 day year .... I have a guess where the money goes. Do you?
