Mill Plain Road Could Go Fast Food

The Danbury Zoning Commission is considering a petition to allow fast food restaurants on Mill Plain Road.

Danbury Land Use Attorney Neal Marcus is seeking to add fast food to the CA-80 zone, which is a hybrid zone that allows commercial and retail businesses on the same street. He wants fast food added as a special exception, so each establishment will get its own review.

Marcus said he filed the request on behalf of Equity One Inc. which owns the Trader Joe's plaza. The plaza that faces I-84's exit 2 is also home to Starbucks and DSW. Marcus said Starbucks is seeking a drive-through window, which isn't allowed in the zone. Marcus said it would also help a Dunkin Donuts win approval.

The question of fast food on Mill Plain Road seems to have been settled by numerous approvals over the years, including a Dutchess Restaurant, a Peachwave yoghurt shop and Starbucks itself. History tells us that Dutchess won its approval because it is located on the long-time hotdog stand called Moffa's. Peachwave argued it was an ice cream shop and not a real fast food restaurant.

The Zoning Commission will consider this request at a public hearing Tuesday evening at Danbury City Hall.
