Food Review: Black Angus Grill Serves Savory Steaks at Affordable Price

On a recent hot Sunday, my family had a hankering for some hearty steak and potatoes but didn't want to heat up the kitchen or the grill. We decided to go out to eat but didn't want to go somewhere that would break the bank. So we chose Barbarie's Black Angus Grill.

Okay, so we're a little behind the eight ball on this one. The place opened up last year but we had yet to try it. I looked up their website and saw they had a prixe fixe menu on Sundays that offered a complete four-course meal for only $25 per person, and we were on our way.

Judging from the line of of people they had out the door, we knew they must be doing something right. We were greeted with a very friendly hello by the owner and recognized him from their other restaurant across town, Jim Barbarie's.

This place had a much different atmosphere than their sister restaurant. For starters, there are three separate dining areas of tables and booths. The booths are perched up high, perfect viewing for the world cup soccer game that was on. Across the room there was a large viewing case of their aged steaks.

Our waiter was friendly, greeted us promptly and took our drink order. Fresh warm rolls and butter were brought to our table. They were delicious. We were told their distributor was a secret and they don't give away that information. Ooh, mysterious!

We all chose the same soup, cream of broccoli. It was a smooth puree of broccoli, cream and cheddar, very creamy but a little too filling. We were saving room for steak. The Caesar salad came next, beautifully displayed Romaine lettuce with fresh shaved parmigiana cheese and freshly baked croutons. The dressing was creamy and flavorful.

And now, the piece de resistance! The main course. We all ordered filet mignon, butterflied. Other menu choices included pork tenderloin, pan roasted cod, and chicken breast sauteed with tomatoes and herbs.

The filet mignon was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, topped with mushrooms and Cipolli onions and wrapped in Neuske's bacon. Each bite melted in our mouths and was better than the last.

We almost didn't have room for dessert but once we saw the beautiful tray of sugary treats, changed our minds. Choices included chocolate mousse, creme brulee, bread pudding and more. We went for the chocolate! (see photos).

There was no comparison to  other restaurants with the value we got, considering we all had four courses, including filet mignon. At other local establishments a filet costs $23.95 and up and that is not including all the appetizers and dessert. For the price of this four course meal, drinks (2 beers, 2 glasses of wine, 4 sodas), coffee and dessert our bill came to $145 for four people. We left a $30 tip for excellent service and we will definitely be back.

The "4 for $25" prixe fixe menu is available on Sundays only from 12:00-4:00p.m. Reservations are accepted.

I highly recommend Barbarie's Black Angus Grill for a delicious meal and stellar service at an affordable price. You won't leave hungry, that's for sure!
