Lazy reporting as usual on Danbury Patch. This is not an article; it's just a list, most likely republished from another source. How about an explanation of each number and description? Or maybe at least putting the list in order from best to worst? A quote from an inspector? ANYTHING?
Mark Langlois (Editor) September 14, 2012 at 01:38 PM
Hi Observer, The Health department's computers have been going through renovations for the last two years. Now they're working. This is the first list made available since then. I will publish an explanation list as soon as I can. Beyond that, this is a report from the city on the month's restaurant inspections. It is list. It isn't a, "It was a dark and stormy night," narrative story. It isn't a best to worst kind of story. It is a list of inspections and what they found. As always, nice to have you back.
Observer September 14, 2012 at 01:48 PM
It's your excuse for a top story when you're too lazy to investigate the actual news going on in our city, is what you meant to say.
Mark Langlois (Editor) September 14, 2012 at 01:54 PM
It will be the best read story on Danbury Patch for several days. (You will never know what I want to say,) which is what you 'meant' to say when you wrote, 'is what you meant to say.'

what a tool comment observer.1- the list is in order, it is called alphabetic order. 2-of course the info is republished from another source, where else would one get a CITY health inspection but from the CITY. 3-a quote from an inspector? would you like for an inspector to describe how dirty a particular restaurant is? so that the restaurant can then sue the city for slander. 4asking for an explanation of each line item is your only semi-valid point, though most are self-explanatory. how much more explanation does "Presence of insects/rodents." need? i'm just glad mark published this, since the city doesn't have the info available on their "great" website.

I am interested in a bit more explanation around the "automatic failure", etc.. I'm not sure I understand when there is praise vs. condemnation. Mark, can you put a little more info in the article? Also, there isn't much here on the actual taste or relevance of the food (is it good for Mexican, bad for American style, etc.)? Perhaps some feedback from another source like Yelp would make this kind of article a real pivotal piece of information. For us folk in Danbury, dollars aren't coming easy these days. I got bad food poisoning twice in the last two months in Danbury restaurants. Ergo, I am very interested in this information!!!!
Mark Langlois (Editor) September 14, 2012 at 02:37 PM
Hi Marc, An "Automatic Failure," is a major violation. It is a four-point violation. Any four pointer is a failure, which means an automatic reinspection. A restaurant that keeps doing that can be shut down. A minor violation (can't find the paper work that says TWO people at the restaurant are trained food service handlers, but the inspector knows you had it last time around) is a one, two or three point violation. As for more information, this is a complicated issue, and I didn't get the full explanation of all violations yet. Once I have it, I will publish that explanation with each monthly report. (I was so happy to see this after two years of waiting, I published it quick.) These are not 'restaurant reviews.' These don't tell you if it's good Mexican or bad. This has nothing to do with how good a restaurant tastes. This is about healthy kitchen practices. Might the restaurant make you sick, perhaps? (One of the restaurants on this list failed and I will probably have lunch there today. I just like it. I'm not happy about the inspection, but I like the food.)

Thank you for this. We needed to know how the Health Dept. rated our Danbury restaurants. An alphabetical list certainly make sense to me and I agree its not meant to be a restaurant review.

Good Taste Chinese Restaurant = absolute YUCK. Glad I now know NEVER to go there. <gag>
Lisa B September 16, 2012 at 02:02 AM
We need to be updated of these local restaurants more often. Hope they fix these issues this is really gross but good to know
Mark Langlois (Editor) September 16, 2012 at 12:15 PM
Hi Lisa B, The Health Department will issue these reports once a month, and we'll publish them once a month. I think once it gets rolling, people will understand them. I will also get the list of violations and explanations and post that with each episode.

I've cooked in many restaurants, including some 4 & 5 star NYC & L.A. famous names. If their inspections were put up side by side here with these, most folks would never eat out in Manhattan or L.A. again. Hospital-like vigilance is required in a restaurant e.g. #42: Presence of insects/rodents: you’d think "Eww! that HAS to be an automatic failure, but there IS NO RESTAURANT that ACTUALLY has ZERO "presence". If the inspector happens to see a fly (yes A single fly) anywhere, you get the violation. This fly could’ve flown in the back door with the inspector 5 min. earlier. "The list" is a public disclosure... just a starting point. That's why there are certain "automatic fails". #3 is in the 'top 5' for a reason! If meat, poultry or seafood is allowed to reach a certain temp. for a certain period of time AT ANY POINT in the transportation, storage prep. (even the 'service to table' end point), that can be VERY dangerous so it’s an automatic fail. Reading this always grosses out people, the idea is to 'keep a flame at the feet' of the operators to MAINTAIN vigilance. The system isn't close to perfect. More regulations need to be passed AND MORE INSPECTORS need to be hired to come close to what people would say were enough (most folks would completely freak out if they found out how FEW inspectors there are to cover HOW MANY establishments), BUT WAIT! We need to to shrink the size of govt. right? Food for thought...
