Pilot Uninjured When Plane Crashes At Danbury Airport

Update at 1:45 p.m., June 15:

The pilot whose plane landed on its belly at Danbury Airport this morning was not injured in the crash.

The pilot's identity has not been released. The single-engine plane's wheels were not down when it came in for a landing, according to Paul Estefan, the airport administrator.

Estefan said the situation during the crash was doubly dangerous, because as the first plane crashed, a second plane took off and immediately radioed the tower it had smoke in the cabin. Estefan said the tower diverted air traffic away from the airport. Controllers gave the departing plane clearance to land, and it landed safely. Estefan said that emergency landing is also under investigation .

The NTSB and the FAA are investigating to determine the cause of the crash, which took place between 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

The original report follows:

Danbury fire dispatch says the department is responding to a reported plane crash at the city's airport.

Details are scarce and there is no word yet on any possible injuries. The fire dispatcher said he expects more information to be available within the next few hours.

The News Times is reporting that a plane of an unknown size crashed at the airport shortly after 10 a.m. today, June 15. The airport is located on Wibling Road.

This is at least the third crash at the airport in that many years. One crashed in August of last year, and the three passengers escaped injury. Another, in October of 2011, claimed the life of a 64-year-old man from Kansas.
