Weekend Planner

Here are five activities for the weekend.

The Danbury Senior Center is sponsoring a HUGE tag sale from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Elmwood Hall, 10 Elmwood Place, in downtown Danbury. For more information, click here.

 

The Still River Greenway Day takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on the greenway, which is located at 1 Corporate Drive in Commerce Park. The day offers short hikes, bird watching, small animal watching, hawk and eagle demonstrations, African dancing and much more. For information, click here.

 

Walk for Health Day is being sponsored around Danbury by the city to encourag people to take a walk or hike to both see the city's parks and to improve their health. Options include the Bear Mountain Reserve, a Downtown History Walk, the Ives Trail, Tarrywile Park and the brand new Farrington Woods open space near Exit 1 on I-84. For information, click here.

The Second Annual Plein Air Festival takes place from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Tarrywile Mansion and Park, 70 Southern Boulevard, Danbury. The festival brings together artists who drew, painted and photographed the park over the last month in an effort to raise money for the park and demonstrate its beauty. For information, click here.

Visit the Art Show at St. Ann's Melkite Greek Catholic Church, 181 Clapboard Ridge Road, Danbury. The show will feature drawings, paintings, photography, sculpture, jewelry, crafts and pottery. For more information, click here.

It shows and compares what Danbury is paying per student compared to the rest of the state. Looking at the numbers, out of the 170+ districts in the state, Danbury pays the 8th LEAST amount per pupil. Out of the 10 districts in Connecticut that have over 10,000 students, Danbury ranks 2nd LOWEST in the state. This amount is about $3,000 less per pupil than the average of the state and the average of districts with 10,000+ students.

Teachers, administrators, contracted professionals, staff enrichment programs, staff insurance, and the rest comprise about 95% of the school system budget. See staff cost summary on page 8 of the report. You'll also note our board of education plans to spend a bit more than 3 million dollars on supplies and materials plus a million on equipment. The budget represents a 5% increase from the prior year. On our district home page - http://www.danbury.k12.ct.us/ it says Danbury has 10,300 my calculator tells me that's about $12,000 per child in the district. With $12,000 per child, why are teachers paying for supplies? Hmm ... let me think ... 95% of the budget goes to staff salary and benefits for the long 185 day year .... I have a guess where the money goes. Do you?
