Here are five activities you can enjoy this weekend.

Live indie music starts at 7 p.m. Friday at the Heirloom Arts Theatre, 155 Main St., and it includes Shai Hulud, Counterparts, Palehorse, Downpour, Light in May and Manner.

Try Hockey for Free this weekend at the Danbury Ice Arena, 1 Independence Way, Danbury, CT 06810. The session from 2 to 3 p.m. is open for 4 years olds to 8 years olds. First time skaters will take the ice in full hockey gear

The Third Annual Chili Winter Warm-up at the Danbury Ice Arena takes place on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. giving people a chance to sample a variety of competing chilis, a chance to skate, enjoy the entertainment and visit the arena. The cost is $5 per person or $15 for a family.

The annual event is sponsored by the Danbury Westerners, CityCenter Danbury and the Danbury Ice Arena. The event donates money to local non-profit groups. For more information, click here

 

 

The Danbury Whalers are giving people a chance to enjoy an introduction to yoga at the Danbury Ice Arena on Monday nights at 7 p.m. for one hour.  The cost is $15, and a member of the Whalers will join the class. For more information, click here.

 

The Danbury High School Boys Basketball team will play Fairfield Warde Monday at 7 p.m. at Danbury High School. The school is located at 43 Clapboard Ridge Road, Danbury. For more information, click here.

It shows and compares what Danbury is paying per student compared to the rest of the state. Looking at the numbers, out of the 170+ districts in the state, Danbury pays the 8th LEAST amount per pupil. Out of the 10 districts in Connecticut that have over 10,000 students, Danbury ranks 2nd LOWEST in the state. This amount is about $3,000 less per pupil than the average of the state and the average of districts with 10,000+ students.

Teachers, administrators, contracted professionals, staff enrichment programs, staff insurance, and the rest comprise about 95% of the school system budget. See staff cost summary on page 8 of the report. You'll also note our board of education plans to spend a bit more than 3 million dollars on supplies and materials plus a million on equipment. The budget represents a 5% increase from the prior year. On our district home page - http://www.danbury.k12.ct.us/ it says Danbury has 10,300 my calculator tells me that's about $12,000 per child in the district. With $12,000 per child, why are teachers paying for supplies? Hmm ... let me think ... 95% of the budget goes to staff salary and benefits for the long 185 day year .... I have a guess where the money goes. Do you?
