October is Car
Care Month at AAA, and it’s the perfect time to start thinking about how to
best prepare vehicles for rough winter weather. AAA Southern New England wants
to help, and can offer some great tips and checklists to help New Englanders
make sure their automotive affairs are in order before the season turns.
AAA’s winter car care checklist and seasonal maintenance guide help New Englanders with everything from engine performance and the exhaust system to batteries, wipers and emergency gear. Some simple things to consider when evaluating your car’s winter readiness include:
Check Your Tires: Be sure to take proactive measures and check your treads – if they’re worn-down, be sure to either purchase new all-around tires or change over to your snow tires before winter arrives.
Test Your Battery: Your battery’s strength can significantly decrease when the outdoor temperature dips below 32 degrees. New Englanders can take advantage of AAA Southern New England’s free battery testing clinics, taking place at selected AAA locations throughout October. Residents can find their local clinic here.
Change Your Wiper Blades: Wiper blades should clear the glass with each swipe, and if they don’t, be proactive and replace them before winter arrives. AAA recommends changing them every 6 to 12 months. It is also crucial to make sure your windshield washer reservoir is filled.
Step on the Brake: When the thermometer goes below 32 degrees, a thin layer of ice can appear on the roadway, so anticipate that the distance it will take for you to safely brake will double. You should pay special attention to your braking distance when driving on bridges.
AAA Southern New England will be offering free battery checks this Saturday, October 19 at the AAA location in Danbury.
