NVCC Offers WCSU Students Low Cost Pathway to College-Level Math this Winter Intersession

This Winter Intersession, Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC) is offering a self-paced math course for Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) students who place into pre-college-level algebra.

While the course is offered and taught by NVCC, it is available exclusively to WCSU students and hosted on the WCSU campus in Danbury. Taking the course through NVCC saves WCSU students approximately $800 on the course, which is a requisite to college-level math but doesn't earn students college credit, and enables them to take math for credit in the spring.

Classes are held five days a week from 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. over a three-week period beginning Dec. 19 and ending Jan. 10, 2013. Professor Mariangeli Zerbi, along with two Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) tutors, will work directly with the students.

According to Kathy Taylor, J.D., director of ACE and a co-coordinator of the initiative, this pilot reaches across institutional boundaries within the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (ConnSCU) system to help students successfully progress through remedial math without exhausting their financial aid.

"This is an opportunity for NVCC to pilot a program that directly satisfies the new state PA 12-40 requirements," said Taylor. "PA 12-40 , An Act Concerning College Readiness and Completion, asks ConnSCU to offer certain students remedial support embedded with corresponding entry-level courses and certain other students an intensive college readiness program by the Fall 2014 semester. This winter pilot is part of a continued partnership with WCSU and will inform how we continue to collaborate."
