Old news. MAIG is bleeding members left and right, since politicians know that being anti-gun is notRead More smart politics in America. MDA is nothing more than a cult of bored housewives, much like NAA and SHP. The brutal truth is that people are losing interest in this whole gun control agenda, despite the fact that NAA tries its best to make sure we all suffer for the actions of Adam Lanza. Also, when you tell me I cannot have a certain gun because it scares you, you have in essence taken said gun away from me. So of course Bloomie is lying. Now then, as to the hoplophobic response, just wait for it. 5..4..3..2..1.."It's for the children!" Yep. Of course it is. *facepalm*

@ richard- isnt it funny that if you search the internet or consult dog experts about the best largeRead More dogs for families to own pit bulls are never on that list! there is a reason that all different resources will list Bernese mountain dogs, collies, mastiffs, golden retrievers, great danes, and labs on these list of great family dogs. that is because these dogs are smart, easy to train, and not aggressive or viscous. yes once in a blue moon you'll hear about an attack but that is very rare. i love how you people think there is some conspiracy about pit bulls and people just have it out for them. there is a reason they are not recommended by experts as family dogs and that is because they are more aggressive. if you say a collie is just a viscous as a pit you are just in denial. i have owned a collie and a pitbull. the collie was gentle with little kids and knew not to be rough, the pit on the other hand would knock down and scratch kids not because he was trying to hurt them but he was trying to play and just didnt know his own strength. also my collie has not show his teeth or snarled at other dogs. my pit would show his teeth and snarl at other dogs all the time, he thought he was protecting me so its not his fault its nature. if a visitor left my backyard fence open i would not have to worry about my collie attacking a person or killing another dog. however if my if someone left my backyard fence open with my pit the results could be life changing. that is why my pit is now owned by my cousin who has a farm and acres for it to run around and no random kids or dogs around, they dont belong in highly populated area. so like i said there are plenty of dogs of all sizes that are a better choice for a dog.

"jim" when you say "if you search the internet or consult dog experts about the bestRead More large dogs, etc., etc." you did not give a link, which makes it clear that this is all in your own mind. You are fearful of a dog breed that some have vilified. I suggest you search again on the internet and find other sources so that you may educate yourself with truthful information. Here's a link you will probably not like: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/americanstaffordshire.htm

#lucia. The blogger created that title. The journalist that wrote the reference article onlyRead More mentions "dog attack" in the headline. And in the fourth paragraph Staffordshire Terrier, which most people (including myself before this blog) don't even know are a pit bull. That is very far from the "media sensationalism" you pit bull defenders always claim exists.

According to the American Temperament Society, which tests individual dogs of all breeds as far asRead More stability, Pit Bull Terriers consistently rank within the top 5 breeds as the most stable. When I was growing up, we always had Pits, no one ever got hurt. I have been bitten by a poodle. As for horses in NYC. The horses get hurt & they are, for the most part treated badly. Please get facts before writing.

Owners of any dog are totally responsible for the actions of their dog. This is why there are leashRead More laws. This elderly woman's life will never be the same. She deserves to be SAFE taking a walk in her neighborhood. Pit Bulls have massive jaws and have ripped off peoples faces. Sadly this is the fault of the owner. This dog that attacked the woman has to be put down. There is no way to rehabilitate a dog like this. The owner needs to do some serious jail time and be totally accountable for all medical expenses and treatments regarding this terrible crime. Apologies this poor woman and all of her family as well.
Linda C April 16, 2014 at 11:47 am
Unfortunately here in Connecticut we do not have any leash laws. Ct Statue reads that the animalRead More must be under the owners control at all times - (which of course the one that recently attacked the elderly woman was not). Very difficult here in Ct to get an irresponsible dog owner to behave responsibly. As well as no leash law, we don't have any barking dog laws either. It fall under being a nuisance, and that is to be interpreted by the local authorities. My area right now would kill to get the average pit bull back; we are currently dealing with the new and improved Cane Corso breed aka Presa Canario- might recall they were the breed that mauled the woman in San Franciso to death in her apt building hallway. An attorney who lived in the building was watching them for the owner who was in jail at the time. I retract my prior statement that it was 85% owner - 15% animal - I do believe the owners are 100% responsible for being a Properly Educated Owner of any breed. It is however a medical (Veterinarian Fact), that the constant inbreeding that goes on with the owners who only see these dogs as dollar signs due cause traits that can't be trained out of them.
Jack Baillargeron April 16, 2014 at 11:53 am
Linda C. Most leash laws are done through a local ordinance not State law. You should check yourRead More local town or City Ordinances and if they do not have one, demand it at a Council meeting. It is one of the most responsible, ordinances to have and allows people to go after the owners if damage occurs due to their animals. I would venture to guess there is a leash law at the local level where you are unless you are in the country.

Boss Hog I see you changed your subtitle from "telling the whole story" to "helpingRead More people make decisions". Was that because I pointed out the FACT that you were NOT sharing the "whole story"? Let me point out something else, your NOT helping anyone with you simpleton approach to a Blog. I get it, you don't like certain dogs. It's your choice and your opinion. Your NON blog is just a collection of stories written by someone else and pictures that have nothing to do with the stories you recycle. It it exactly this biased reporting of a collection of horror stories about people being attacked that creates a fear of these dogs. Not all bully breed dogs are evil and bad. I feel bad for the people injured. It's terrible. But you neglect to tell the OTHERSIDE of the bully breeds. I personally know many pitbull type dogs that do good things but unfortunately we live in a drama addicted society so happy stories don't sell. you are in no way helping anyone. Try actually writing more than five bullet points about a terrible story. It would be nice to see some real discussion. It's unfortunate that many people hate these dogs based solely on the news instead of based on personal experience. I used to be that person until I actually met several pitbull dogs.

Hi Maya- I hopped back on this thread for one purpose- you and others on this thread have madeRead More sincere, intelligent comments. But you are ignoring the cardinal rule of the internet: Don't Feed the Trolls. Boss Hogg is a troll. His biased presentation of one sided material, "culled" (pun intended) from a broad, unrelated array of news sources, is classic trolling. Remember: Trolling is not just for the comments! The whole purpose of a blog can be to troll for outrage, and pageviews, as seems to be the case here.

You people all should get a life. By definition none of you who speak out against pit bulls haveRead More any first hand experience with pit bulls let alone owned, or taken care of one. My pit mix is the best, sweetest dog ever. And he was the eighth of seven prior fosters - some good, others great. I know there are bad dogs out there, and pits like any larger dog are powerful. So when they're bad, they're dangerous - but there's nothing unique to the breed that makes them so. By the way, my cocker spaniel/beagle mix is crazy and dangerous.

Tom can you prove MAIG is doing anything BUT lobbying for gun control? When was the last time youRead More saw a criminal illegally possessing a firearm get the "MAX" penalty? When they don't where is MAIG to protest the court house? Also you do realize that so called "assault weapons" are barely used in crime, less than .3% of the time so why attack them? So I support background checks BUT tell me why it matters what weapon I purchase? On every background check they ask for make, model and serial number why is that? It is no ones business what I own or don't own.....that is the main sticking point on backgrounds checks. Your point about "high capacity magazines" being able to increase damage exponentially has never been proven just because they were used in high profile crimes doesn't mean that it is proof. I can prove that it is not true. Watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjnsBH9jGxc Gun control has never worked and never will....banning "assault weapons" and "high capacity magazines" will do nothing for crime and that was proven w/ the last ban in 1994-2004 but here we are again. Criminals don't use rifles they use handguns and really could care less about the number of bullets they are carrying in that handgun. That is like driving drunk w/o your seatbelt on....do you think they will prosecute the seatbelt infraction or drop it for the driving drunk infraction? Yes that is how or criminal justice system works and if you think it doesn't your fooling yourself.
Scott April 14, 2014 at 10:38 am
Mike of course not BUT you do realize he was not allowed to own a gun because he was a felon. IRead More don't understand what your point is here....by law he was already excluded from owning a gun. Since the law excluding him from being able to own a gun is already in place and did not stop him you think adding more laws will stop the next Miller?
Cathy McCullen April 14, 2014 at 11:25 am
The reason why so many people want to own a gun for protection is because of goons (a knownRead More felon/criminal) like the mentioned above. These liberals spend all our tax dollars making laws, but will not enforce them. So why pass any more? Criminals are going to break any anti-gun law that is passed and victimize the law abiding citizen that has been disarmed. Proof in point is http://www.cbsnews.com/news/kansas-city-jewish-center-shootings-suspect-frazier-glenn-miller-cross/

I lived on base while in the U.S.N. for many years and dog attacks in general were very rare. TheRead More reason? Because you could get in big trouble if your dog bit someone, like loss of rank, fined, extra duty, or kicked out of the military. The military has banned Pit Bulls on bases because they have a bad track record in the civilian world and an insurance risk.
tribble April 11, 2014 at 05:12 pm
Paul, do you follow military news? Have you seen the new navy missiles and the new stealth warship?
anon April 11, 2014 at 05:28 pm
#Paul, you bring up a great point there - that there are hefty repercussions for any dog attacks andRead More it forces people to be responsible owners and actually handle their dogs properly. The same cannot be said with the general public. Sometimes the owners may get a fine, but some don't even bother registering, fixing, or getting rabies shots. The fines for that are very minimal. I think your answer poses a big question - shouldn't we have more in place that reprimands the owners? In some states, an owner that abuses or neglects a dog can still own a dog if they choose.
