Sweeney Todd at WCSU, A Letter

This letter to the editor written in praise of Sweeney Todd, a Western Connecticut State University production.

We found Broadway in our own backyard!  That’s the level of quality theater that held us spellbound throughout WestConn’s latest theatrical/musical thriller, “Sweeney Todd,” which opened Wednesday night. Stephen Sondheim’s diabolical story woven through lyrics and songs is delivered by an energetic, masterful cast whose performances rival those of seasoned professionals. The set design and scenery are your first clues that the show raises the bar from suburban college campus entertainment to a production worthy of a major city. The expertly cast group of both major and minor players makes you laugh more than squirm at this dark story of revenge, told in an operetta format that showcases some of the finest vocal ranges in the area.  Yes, my daughter is in the ensemble, but she’ll be the first to tell you I’m one of the harshest critics of any production I attend, but this one truly blew me away. Make time to see “Sweeney Todd” in its limited run (through Nov. 12th). For more information, call (203) 837-TIXX or www.wcsu.edu/svpa.
